Your kid loves baseball and is outgrowing rec league. The coach says he has talent. Other parents are talking about “travel ball.” But you have questions — and they are the right questions. Here is an honest guide to what travel baseball actually involves, what it costs, and how to know if your kid is ready.
What Is Travel Baseball?
Travel baseball (also called select ball or club ball) is competitive youth baseball played outside of your local Little League or rec program. Teams are formed through tryouts, practice multiple times per week, and compete in tournaments — usually on weekends — against other travel teams from across the region or state.
The level of competition is significantly higher than rec ball. Games are played on regulation-sized fields (or close to it, depending on age group), with umpires, pitch counts, and tournament-style formats. For kids who love competing and want to develop their skills against the best players in their age group, travel ball is the natural next step.
The Real Cost of Travel Baseball in San Diego
Let us be honest about money, because nobody else is:
- Team fees: $1,000-$3,000 per season depending on the organization, coaching staff, and number of tournaments
- Tournament entry: Usually included in team fees, but some organizations charge separately — $400-$600 per tournament
- Equipment: A quality bat alone runs $200-$400. Add glove, cleats, batting gloves, bag, and helmet — you are looking at $500-$800 to properly outfit a player
- Travel: Most tournaments are local (within San Diego County), but regional events in LA, Orange County, or Arizona add hotel and gas costs
- Private lessons: Optional but common. $50-$100 per session for hitting or pitching instruction
Total cost per year: realistically $3,000-$6,000 for a competitive travel ball experience in San Diego. Some elite organizations run higher.
Is Your Kid Ready for Travel Ball?
Age alone does not determine readiness. Here is what we look for:
- Love for the game — This has to be the kid’s choice, not the parent’s dream. Travel ball is a big time commitment. If your kid does not genuinely love playing, it will become a chore.
- Basic fundamentals — Can they catch, throw, and hit consistently? They do not need to be the best, but they need a foundation to build on.
- Coachability — Are they willing to take instruction, try new things, and handle failure? Travel ball means facing better pitching and making more errors. Kids who shut down after a bad at-bat will struggle.
- Family commitment — Travel ball is a family activity. Weekend tournaments, weeknight practices, and occasional out-of-town trips. Make sure the whole family is on board.
Choosing the Right Travel Ball Organization
San Diego has dozens of travel ball teams. Not all of them are created equal. Here is what to evaluate:
- Coaching quality — Are the coaches experienced? Do they teach or just manage games? Watch a practice before you commit.
- Player development focus — The best organizations prioritize making every player better, not just winning tournaments with their best 9.
- Playing time philosophy — Ask directly: does every kid play, or does the coach ride his starters in close games? There is no wrong answer, but you need to know what you are signing up for.
- Parent culture — Spend 10 minutes in the bleachers during a game. You will learn everything you need to know about an organization by how the parents behave.
- Communication — Does the coach communicate practice schedules, tournament info, and roster decisions clearly and in advance?
